I am celebrating this auspicious year by giving away a signed copy of my
book. All you have to do is tell me in 200 words or less, who your favorite dragon is, and
why. You can pick any dragon from literature, film, art or history. Post your submissions in the comments below and my favourite entry will be chosen on the 13th of Feb. The winner shall be showered in praise and promptly mailed a signed, first edition copy of
The Dragon and the Crow to whatever corner of the world they call home.
Please spread the word.

Once, in the lower levels of Casa Loma, my young son and I chanced upon a dragon! He was sitting on a shelf, among other dragons, all priced to sell. So of course we picked him up and he became OURS. He can be seen at the G+ link below and his original home can be seen in the following link. Yes, toys are art!

ReplyDeleteMy first love of dragons came when I read the book. DEALING WITH DRAGONS by Patricia Wrede.
ReplyDeleteWhen a princess comes along to volunteer to become a dragons princess, Kazul decides to take her on.
Kazul is a wise, elegant dragon, with a sense of humor. She is friends with witches and allergic to wizards.
I will post about your contest on my blog!
Sounds like a good book. Will check it out. Thanks for the shout out on your blog!
DeleteThere’s a lot of good dragons out in the world of books, I could easily rattle off a handful of my favourites (my own creations notwithstanding, of course). But for pure dragon awesomeness ... the bard-loving dragon Ravin Shreckspawn from Foiling the Dragon wins hands – er claws – down. He’s a decent fire-breathing dragon of old history who’s not above terrorising the kingdom and crunching up some knights.
ReplyDeleteYet the reason why I love him the most despite his terribleness ... he speaks a little like Yoda! ^_^
A Yoda speaking Dragon, now that is something I must look into.
DeleteWell, although I feel slightly embarrassed to admit it, my favourite dragon is Puff The Magic Dragon! Just have such fond memories of it being read to me, reading it to my kids, and singing the silly song (only when drunk!). It was such a sweet character and always made me smile. I also have a v funny memory of spending an hour persuading a guy to play it on his guitar and just when he'd finally given in and started playing, in walked a load of his mates and he went bright red and never forgave me. I laughed for days!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I can't listen to that song. It makes me cry.
DeletePoor guitar guy. Sounds like he was about to work some magic before his friends ruined it. My son loves Puff too, but I find the story way too sad, and he is at the age where every. single. detail. of a story must be explained. He just can't understand that Jackie Paper stops visiting Puff. I have to agree, it makes no sense. And then he dies. Sniff.
DeleteDraco of Dragonheart. Reviled as a beast, hated by all, cantankerous and cunning, yet he was cooperative and caring; gave the dragonslayer purpose and a paid vocation, though unwitting customers didn't know the ruse.
ReplyDeleteYes, an excellent example of the dragon archetype. Love Draco.
DeleteSmaug from The Hobbit. I love how terrifying the dragon is made out to be throughout the whole story (granted, for good reason), but when we meet him for the first time, he's so laid back. The way he presents himself is so undragon-like. I've yet to read another as unpredictably cool as him.
ReplyDeleteAnd how happy are we that we get to see him on the big screen soon. I have a feeling dragons are about to get a lot more popular.
DeleteExcellent! My rewrite will be done by then, which has an unorthodox dragon in it. He's my other favorite.
DeleteThat reminds me, I really should polish the query for my last story, Dragon. I know, how original is that. lol
DeleteI just can't wait to see what they do with the Hobbit. And not just for Smaug. I wanna see the end battle scene.
Aw, David's favourite dragon is my favourite dragon! Oh well. I guess my second favourite dragon is Puff the Magic Dragon because he takes me back to my childhood. Oh wait, that's Claire fav dragon! argh!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in the '80's, one of my first exposures to dragons was the live-action movie The Dragon Slayer, & the cartoon movie from 1982: The Flight Of Dragons.
ReplyDeleteSo I have to say - it's Smrgol, the old, cranky dragon who sacrifices himself for his young friend, Gorbash, during the battle with the ogre in The Flight of Dragons.
That sounds awesome. How come I have so little knowledge of pop culture dragons?
DeleteMy favorite dragon has to be Lofwyr from Shadowrun. Seriously, a Dragon that buys a megacorporation in the heavy industry sector in a magic infused cyberpunk setting. He just reeks awesome.
ReplyDeleteThe name alone drips awesome.
DeleteMy favorite is Mr. Dragon from the vintage Mac game The Manhole (designed by the brothers who later brought us Myst). When I got a slightly updated version of the game (in color), Mr. Dragon just didn't have the same charm and coolness as the original Mr. Dragon. I loved playing the game and not knowing when Mr. Dragon would be in when I went to his lair. That was part of the fun of the original game. Sometimes when I went into his lair, he'd be vacuuming and dancing to his jazz songs. I think even my parents still fondly remember how he'd say, "How about a biscuit, baby?" and then breathe his fire onto it in an attempt to warm it up. The biscuit burnt to a crisp every time, of course, and Mr. Dragon was so apologetic. Sometimes you could also see him flying above the tower where he lives in a secretive, out of the way room.
ReplyDeleteA vintage mac game about dragons I haven't heard of? Excuse me, I'll be right back.
DeleteA dragon who's your best friend, your soulmate, whom you can trust completely, perhaps even more. A dragon who's not afraid to reprimand you when you make mistakes. A dragon who would sacrifice for you, even her life. A dragon who understands you totally, and never fails to have complete faith in you...A dragon who's humble but carries an air of dignity and pride. Yet, could admit her own mistakes. A dragon, who's not only beautiful with her sapphire scales, but beautiful with her heart and wisdom. Yes...she's Saphira, in Eragon. She's the perfect dragon.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pity the movie put me off the books. This sounds like an updated version of Falkor and Atreyu -- this is a good thing.
DeleteMost books are better than their movies...
DeleteAnyway, I read the second book first before the first, and I still like the second book the most!
